You think&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.But what has this to do with Carmarthenshire Meadows Group \u2013 it isn\u2019t going to turn up in our fields, is it? And you would have been right \u2013 until the beginning of the month (September 2017), when I found half a dozen sadly mangled specimens in one of my fields after the mowers had done their work.<a href=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/devils-stinkhorn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1420\" src=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/devils-stinkhorn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/devils-stinkhorn.jpg 1379w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/devils-stinkhorn-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/devils-stinkhorn-1024x576.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/devils-stinkhorn-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had no idea what they were but I am fortunate enough to have a Very Knowledgeable Friend who patiently answers my endless stream of e-mails with attached photos of feathers, fungi, flowers, droppings, egg shells etc\u00a0 labelled \u2018Whatever is this?\u2019 \u2013 and she is always right. Like the Waxcap mushrooms which are frequently found in our meadows, it&#8217;s one of a group of fungal genera called CHEG&#8217;s (Clavaria-Hygrocybe-Entoloma-Geoglossaceae), which are considered to be indicator species for old permanent grasslands.<a href=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/p1170872-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1425\" src=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/p1170872-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/p1170872-2.jpg 1736w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/p1170872-2-300x290.jpg 300w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/p1170872-2-1024x991.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/p1170872-2-768x743.jpg 768w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/p1170872-2-1536x1486.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>But the interesting thing is that the Fairy fingers haven&#8217;t appeared in our meadows, but rather in our magic multicultural terrace garden. Visitors will know that this part of the garden used to have a pond in it, fifty years ago, to take the water run off from a water wheel sited against the North gable wall. When we acquired Gelli, it had already been filled in, for perhaps 30 years, and was rough grazed pasture. This was then covered by us with smashed concrete and dug out shale from the conversion of the old milking parlour, about 20 years ago. So has the fungus colonised the current, almost grass free, forb based meadow now on this site? Or was it living in the previous rough pasture, and it&#8217;s taken all these years to fight its way to the surface?<\/p>\n<p><em>Julian Wormald.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">___________________<\/p>\n<p>Finally readers may be interested in a fairly new initiative set up in the upper Tywi valley to link local food producers and consumers. Most of the food available will be produced organically as well. Called the<em><strong> Black Mountain Food Hub<\/strong><\/em>, it works as an online farmer&#8217;s market where you can browse products and order on line, and then collect them once a week from their hut near Llandeilo station.
