{"id":1865,"date":"2019-04-11T11:18:05","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T11:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carmarthenshiremeadows.com\/?p=1865"},"modified":"2019-04-11T11:18:05","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T11:18:05","slug":"a-no-problem-rush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/2019\/04\/11\/a-no-problem-rush\/","title":{"rendered":"A no-problem rush"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A post from our Chairman Andrew:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of us have a difficult relationship with rushes, with soft rush (<em>Juncus effusus<\/em>) being a particular problem in some fields when it can become almost a monoculture of hard clumps. It\u2019s also one thing that sheep won\u2019t eat.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, it\u2019s good to see a \u201cnice\u201d rush now flowering in our two fields.&nbsp;It\u2019s field woodrush (<em>Luzula campestris<\/em>).&nbsp;&nbsp;There are only two genera of rushes in Britain,&nbsp;<em>Juncus <\/em>which contains the round-stemmed familiar rushes often of damp ground, and&nbsp;<em>Luzula<\/em>the woodrushes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some of them are impressive large plants like the great woodrush (<em>Luzula sylvatica<\/em>) which can be 80cm tall and dominate the ground flora of woodland, but field woodrush is only a couple of inches high.&nbsp;All the woodrushes have very long hairs on their leaves, especially where they meet the stems, and none of the&nbsp;<em>Juncus <\/em>rushes do, and I\u2019m told that is a reliable way to distinguish them (but am ready to be corrected).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"443\" height=\"333\" src=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/picture2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1867\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s obviously not a grass when you look at the flowers, and because the male and female parts are together and not separated into male and female flowers, it\u2019s not a sedge.&nbsp;&nbsp;There\u2019s a lot of it in our fields, and it flowers in early spring, and is not at all obvious later in the year.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also just appearing in one of our fields is lady\u2019s smock, also known as cuckooflower (<em>Cardamine pratensis<\/em>), we\u2019ve not seen it in this field before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"379\" height=\"506\" src=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/picture3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1868\" srcset=\"http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/picture3.png 379w, http:\/\/185.53.59.222\/~carmsmeadows\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/picture3-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also a few grass plants just starting to flower, and I think this one is sweet vernal grass (<em>Anthoxanthum odoratum<\/em>), but again am prepared to be corrected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"452\" height=\"604\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would anyone else be interested in attending a basic course on identifying common grasses, rushes
